I thought it sucked for a long time too. After more listens, though, the pieces fell into place.

I feel ya, Gentleman. I appreciate the novelty, but it seems like experimentation in all the wrong areas. Listen to Starsailor by Tim Buckley, bro! Hits the avant-garde spot so hard.

Sounds like Zappa trying too hard and losing all of his coherence

Best Captain to start with is Safe as Milk, specifically "Electricity" and "Autumn's Child."

Clear Spot is really easy to listen to too

There's part of the problem, Ars. Blues in most forms is very repugnant to my ears, so I need Captain minus the blues...a near impossible task I know. I endorse "Dropout Boogie" and "Abba Zabba" too.

Doc at the Radar Station is absolutely essential.

| |
this didn't take me infinite lessons to understand, it spoke to me immediately
only bad thing about this album is all the avant-progressive groups after this one trying to do the same arch-humourous lyrics but fucking them up to the point where its like nails on a chalkboard
|
| |
Doc at the Radar Station is essential indeed but it's one of his bluesiest imo

Thanks altertide, Shiny Beast is next on my list.

I'm almost convinced this album was recorded just so the band could laugh at people over-analyzing it for years to come.
