Into the Painted Grey and Ghost of Midwinter Fires should be plenty "metal" for you.

People say that those who don't like this album are too busy comparing it to past releases but even if this was a standalone album by some band nobody has heard of it would still be really meh.

if this was a standalone album I would have had one HELL of a band to watch and it would have easily been my greatest find of the year, personally.
JUST IN CASE MY 5/5 RATING DIDN'T SAY ENOUGH~~~
i actually think this could be my favorite Agalloch album yet, oh I'm so crazy~

pretty much everything about this album is absolutely and completely perfect for me, that's all i can say about it. i honestly love it too much. ;;
it's everything I loved about Agalloch amplified. that feeling I got before is there in this release but better. it mixed every aspect about Agalloch I already loved and multiplied it by three. The atmosphere, the groove, the song structures, the experimentation... I'd write a review but it would honestly just look like a fanboy jizzing over it (which is kind of what it is, but hey, at least I can admit it).
bottom line, it's Agalloch for me |3
EDIT: oh and I'd like to mention that I heavily disagree with your comment on Black Lake being better if it ended earlier. 8 minutes onwards to the end of Black Lake is absolute and uncompromised bliss. the drones, the hypnotic as fuck guitars... aaa

It doesn't sound anything like The Mantle though, even if you think it's boring.
agreed.
so far this is a letdown.

I don't think it's reaches the level of their previous three albums, but it's still Agalloch. I absolutely love the nod to "Nattens Madrigal" that is the beginning riff of "Into the Painted Grey," which is the standout track on the album for me by far.

This is Agalloch stepping away from The End Records and hoping on board with Profound Lore. Whether you like this or not, it's affected the sound/ songwriting immensely and I believe this is a prime example of the influence a record label and it's roster can have on an artist.

I'd go so far as to say it's the worst release I've heard from Profound Lore.

ugh
But then again they have Watain as number 2 so clearly they have no idea what's going on

yeah I thought that, the new Watain was boring as hell. Still, I think it's worthy of the top spot.
in case you couldn't already tell I think this album is amazing
FANBOYISM FULL POWER

Honestly, that list is a lot better than I would have thought. Surprised to see a lot of those made it. Though Jupiter and Paracletus are too low.
