The "real" Wilco being alt-country that I do not want more of

I mean they formed out of the seminal alt-country band, started out as an alt-country band, made 2.5 non-alt-country albums, then returned to alt-country but mixed it with alt-rock more so than before.

Have no doubts, Jeff Tweedy is an alt-country artist through and through, his career just made a brief diversion that was largely driven by other people anyways.

Summerteeth is essentially equal to this in my eyes and is probably my personal "favorite" Wilco even though this is marginally "better".

Ghost is amazing too but it falls somewhere in the middle of my ranking of their discog

Tall buildings shake, voices escape

Singing sad, sad songs tuned to chords

Strung down your cheeks, bitter melodies

Turning your orbit around

For me, Summerteeth is the peak of their songwriting, I mean it's pretty much the perfect pop album but this has the feel of a concept album holding it together and has the more interesting sonic palette. Hence why I find Summerteeth more compulsively listenable than this. (Not that the songwriting here is poor by any means.)

This > Summerteeth > the rest

I used to feel that way, but some of Summerteeth got tiring

Because it pains me to see Wilco's discog reduced to "the rest":

Summerteeth = YHF > Being There > The Whole Love > Sky Blue Sky = A Ghost Is Born > Schmilco > Star Wars > Wilco (The Album) > A.M.

This is their best and Summerteeth is close behind.

Everyone seems to put A.M. at the bottom. I don't think it's great, but I prefer it to a few of their late-career albums.

A.M. is very good straight but I still can't help but hear it as Uncle Tupelo lite.

Yeah I get that Boney, though some of Wilco's later albums, while most are still really good, are kind of Wilco-lite themselves.

Being There is one of the masterpieces of alt-country, for 19 songs it's incredibly consistent and also features some of their best songwriting.

Their late albums are only Wilco-lite if you're looking for every album to be another YHF or Summerteeth.
