Would wager PHM to be a nice and easy 2.5
fantastic singles, nothing much else to it and it certainly isn't an enticing album as a whole

I think PHM is overrated, but it’s still a good album and Something I Can Never Have is one of their best.
I actually like Hesitation Marks, but it’s still closer to the bottom of their discog (but not the bottom).

Maybe Hesitation Marks will click someday with me - at first I thought The Slip was awful and now I really like it.

And regarding the lyrics: I can not think of any other artist whose lyrics range from simply cringy bad to fucking beautiful and genius like on The Great Below. You never know what you are going to get from Reznor - but I think that also a bit appealing.

Hesitation Marks is definitely spotty, but Various Methods of Escape is one of my favorite NIN songs. And there are some other great songs like I Would For You, In Two and While I’m Still Here. It’s actually a pretty good damn album.

You never know what you are going to get from Reznor
he hasn't written a good lyric in over 20 years. they are predictable, derivative, and ambiguous to a point so far beyond obfuscation that they become universally relatable solely by being rendered entirely meaningless. i always know what i'm going to get from trent lyrically.

YOU’RE WRONG!!!

trent writing lyrics is like an elementary school kid ad libbing the 3 basic rhyme schemes he just learned
|
| |
It's actually fucking embarrassing
It's okay though, it's just never been his strength. nobody's perfect. he makes up for it in other areas.

counterpoint:
I AM A BIG BOY AND I WILL SWALLOW IT ALL SWALLOW IT ALL SWALLOW IT ALL SWALLOW IT ALL

actually, I'd like to retract that one and offer "I GOT MY ARMS THEY FLIP FLOP FLIP"

LOL

Nin was one if my first big music obsessions so I spent a long time in denial about how abysmal his lyrics are but eventually you just gotta face it and learn to love NIN without pretending that Reznor has had anything to say about anything since he stopped doing heroin and drinking absinthe every day.
