The second generation of Deep Purple gives us their best album up to this point - The hard rock masterpiece that is 'Deep Purple in Rock.'

The album opens with Speed King and what an opener it is. The song immediately explodes with a great riff followed by Ian Gillian's high pitched wail. What comes next is an organ bridge where Lord and Blackmore trade off and underneath Roger Glover plays some solid basslines. Speed King is heavier and more energetic than any song prior to this release. The two new additions to the band prove they were key to the success of this song and album.

The next track, Bloodsucker, has an instantly memorable riff and more awesome organ-guitar tradeoffs. Gillian's vocals here are a highlight.

The 10 minute epic, Child In Time, is one of the best tracks in rock. Absolute classic from start to finish with beautiful melodies, a killer guitar solo, and masterful drumming. Every band member is on fire, but this track was truly made for Gillian.

You cannot go wrong with this record. Every track is an instant classic. Memorable riffs, killer leads (Hard Lovin' Man), great keys, superb basslines, Paice's brilliant drumming, and primal screams.

Jon Lord is easily in the top 5 of the greatest rock keyboard players. Paice on the other hand, is one of the rocks underrated drummers.

Deep Purple in Rock crushes anything by Zeppelin.

I think it's opposite. The US version didn't have the intro, "The original UK version of the album includes the full introductory instrumental, featuring a loud free-form Blackmore guitar passage blending into a quieter Lord organ piece, but the US version did not include the intro."

Yeah, Death Penalty is pretty amazing. Total Sabbath clone, but still awesome.
