This album, and all of their first 3 albums, are absolutely brilliant. Incredibly unique and sneakily influential. Criminally underappreciated in the shoegaze/dream pop community.

they're way more post-punk than shoegaze

Their influence on shoegaze/dream pop is massive, though. They are certainly pioneers of that atmosphere and approach to songwriting. But you're right, I wouldn't consider them a shoegaze band. In fact, I can't think of a single shoegaze band or album that comes remotely close to this album or these guys, in terms of quality, catchiness, and musicianship. At least in my opinion

the band walked the line between cheese and classic perfectly - i dont even mean that in a bad way, it adds to the epicness of the album

Yes, I agree completely.

Also, anyone else think that Robert Pollard took massive influence from these guys? Like, sometimes GBV sounds like lo-fi Chameleons without reverb lol and I love both. Plus, Pollard's vocals sometimes sound an awful lot like Burgess'

As far as shoegaze/dream pop go I’ve read that Kitchens of Distinction were very influenced by this group.

I've never fully immersed in the genre, checked and loved some classics here and there, but this actually made me excited to finally do it
