I just think rating something without giving it at least a couple full listens is stupid, and I strongly doubt breakingthefragile has listened to many of those 6000+ albums more than once (and some I'm sure he rated after a couple songs)

If you get a kick out of constantly blazing through new music without every stopping to savour it, that's fine. I just don't trust the opinions of people like that, simply because they don't put any time or care into forming them

i agree with him for the most part, though i often rate after just one listen if I know I enjoyed it enough to give it whatever rating I did.

that said, it really depends on the album, some can be harder to get into than others for sure

Yeah agreed demi, some you feel hit home immediately while others can take forever. I try not to rate something until I've heard it twice in full, personal rule (just because I've hated some albums on first listen and loved them on second)

i've said it before, I take my ratings way too seriously, its kind of saddening

Discussion > numbers yes, but the vast majority of discussion on album threads is between people who know the album well

And also if you rated something 4 years ago based on an opinion you held back then (that you might not hold now), that's still way better than something you rated recently after half a listen

A fairly large portion of my ratings are compilation albums honestly. Greatest Hits made up of songs that I had already heard on their original albums. I just gave those ratings for the hell of it, it was kind of an OCD thing though as well. A good part of the other stuff is soundtracks to movies that I've seen where I figured if I've seen the movie I've pretty much heard the soundtrack so I might as well rate it, really stupid I know, I guess that was another part of an OCD thing. Another portion was my friends dicking around with my account and rating random bands they had heard of because they were bored and didn't want to bother going through the process of making an account, and I let them do it because at one point, I really didn't give a fuck and didn't think this whole reviewing thing was going anywhere. But I'm a contributor now, and I might as well ask to get some ratings wiped or something, because 6000 ratings that are mostly of random shit doesn't look good at all.

Though I have rated every album I've ever actually heard among those 6000 ratings, and I'd estimate that it comes up to 3000 to 3200.

Yeah that makes sense man, I know what you mean about that OCD thing, when you first get here you rate every album by every band you know. I cleared a bunch of my ratings when I realised I was rating albums based on one song, or whether that album was supposedly good or not... now I only have 319 ratings or something. But they're all honest ones, I'd rather that than thousands and thousands of dishonest ones.

If you're someone who can digest music super quick, as in a listen or two, that's fine. I just can't help but feel someone with so many ratings will have a lot of fluff in there. Props for admitting that's the case

Thanks for being understanding of it man, I appreciate it. I would have talked about it sooner, but I just really didn't feel like explaining and getting into it, and I was a little embarrassed by it at first to be completely honest. I'm gonna contact Willie, Chan, or Dev some time this week and do something about it. Start of a new year, I now know the ins and outs of the site, I should start off fresh.

You speak for youself mate. I rate (honestly at the time I might add) albums as a whole. Only a douche would rate an album based on one song.

I dunno, I dig heaps of the sounds and ideas here, but don't like how they all hang together. Maybe I'm not really a double album guy

Yeah trails off a little, as does The Wall, Mellon Collie, etc.

Some of his best tunes here though and the (over)production is stellar
