How many other bands are so damn legendary that they have an entire genre named after them? i can't think of any.
I don't think there is one, no.
I think it partly has to do with the fact that usually the primitive stages of any genre is always very loose and needs much more definition.
But Death completely defined almost everything there is to define in Death metal, image, sound, everything.
