Cool to see different opinions regarding these legends.

DP will prob never be as beloved as Sabbath or Zep tho, even if they recorded one of the best live albums in history.

Which they of course did hard! I would prefer Paranoid to any Zeppelin album as well, and I do love Houses of the Holy and LZIV.

Yeah, I always though DP got too much neglect in classic rock discussions.

It also kinda sucks when people play the "consistency card". I'd like to see anyone start a band and keep it going for more than 40 years without making a single shite album.

Rush is prob the only band that can stake a claim on that, although HYF hasn't clicked with me yet.

Hold Your Fire is pretty good, but it's nothing in comparison to what they did with anything before Grace Under Pressure.

Plus, I'll bet many people are secretly jealous of the fact that they'll never be as legendary as DP, Sabbath or LZ. Or any of those other jotuns. They say: "oh, so and so was shite", but they say to their innermost selves: "I wish I could have sold as many albums as those guys; wish I could be half as famous; wish I was a fucking rock god".

Deep Purple's work since their reunion in the 80s is mostly miss but that doesn't change the fact that what they did in the 70s is legendary. A band can be consistent but at the same time mediocre for their whole career.

That can happen, yeah.

I gotta jam more DP to deliver my final judgement unto them, but from what I've heard on MH, these guys definitely had some kickass stuff in the 70's.

Of course they did. My favorites from them are Made in Japan, In Rock, and Machine Head.

Yeah EO, you need to DP hard. Check all the albums that Snowdog said, and also Fireball and Burn. Overlooked band on this site, sadly.

People only remember the band for ONE RIFF in "Smoke On the Water". They definitely deserve more respect.
