What Happened? is too much. Dem strings ugh [2] It closes the album perfectly.
Agreed with Talons. I haven't heard a lot of ambient music, but of what I have heard, this would have to be my favorite.

There's definitely better ambient out there IMO but this is beautiful.

I haven't heard lots of ambient either, but this fucking soars. So haunting and genuinely chilling. Not to mention beautiful too.

Definitely. I enjoy everything here. I would probably list Eos among my all-time favorite album openers.

Yea and All The Love comes right after. One hell of a one-two punch if you ask me.

@Ocean - I would be interested in hearing more in the ambient genre. Is there anything out there that is similar in style to this album? Stars of the Lid is about as far into ambient as I have been.

Not really similar to this style and they're also a bit post rock/shoegaze too but check out Hammock they're incredible.

Mongi - For sure. The piano and trumpet parts are some of the highlights of the album for me.

Looking up Hammock now. Thank you. That sounds like something that would appeal to me. Any particular album I should hear first?

Either Kenotic or Raising Your Voice...Trying To Stop The Echo. I largely prefer Kenotic it's stunning but Raising Your Voice isn't too far behind. Your call though.

I'll go with Kenotic for starters. The first few minutes already sound promising.

The last string arrangements in What Happened? is one of the best moments of their musical career

All of Eros is pretty much a landmark song for them.

I think it's their most popular nonmetal song and such a powerful intro for this album

My fav non metal songs by them are Lost In Moments, Nowhere/Catastrophe and Eros.

I'm really not sure what my favourites are anymore (don't need to say "non-metal" cos none of their black metal songs come anywhere near my favourites). Like Music used to my favourite but other songs on here and on Perdition City may well have surpassed it over time.

Jamie - Like Music is excellent, as is the rest of this record, but Perdition City has some moments that are definitely among this band's best work.
|
| |
Yeah definitely, Perdition City is my favourite Ulver, just slightly ahead of this.

I'm about the same. Where does Messe fall into the mix for you?
