I prefer to think of it as an eccentricity
also when will people realize that this album is just deja entendu at night, played beneath the stars on a cold autmn's eve

and I'm not try-harding at poetry (OK, maybe a tad), but Jesse actually did say around the time of Daisy's release that they wish they had explored more options and directions after the sound of Deja Entendu; that there were alternate paths for the band's career that they decided against and he sort of regretted it
I think SF is that path

I can totally see that. Because it clearly doesn't follow the sound progression from Deja to TDAG to Daisy. It kinda pulls sounds from all three, along with some other new angles not yet explored (such as Desert)

Now that I think about it this does sound like a bastard child between Deja and Daisy. From the 2006 leaked demos you can hear they were going for a somber, but softer sound. TDAG sound was clearly influenced by the leak, and then Daisy a logical step from that.

Yeah this is definitely an amalgamation of all their previous works, most notably an extension of the Demos if you ask me (or as I coined it, Deja at night). Interestingly, they were supposed to drop this in 2016 but pushed it off because they were not satisfied with the style of the album or how it sounded. I wonder how much of the Science Fiction that we have in our hands was present on the original cut? If the original album had I Am a Nightmare and followed that pop-punk theme, I'm so glad they ditched it.
Another interesting thought: what if they truly scrapped that 2016 album and decided to re-record their favorite unreleased-to-the-public tunes? I mean, like, only the very best of their scrapped songs? Can't Get It Out clearly could have been from Deja. 451 from Daisy. Same Logic from TDAG. It would also explain why this is the first Brand New record that didn't revolutionize their style. And maybe that's why we'll never get a dumpoff of all their unreleased tunes because this is basically it. I know there's like a 1% chance any of this is true (SF is too good to be cast-off tunes), but I love theorizing.

Agreed. Well, there seems to be a handful of Brand New songs we haven't heard yet based on what Jesse's wife said. Would be interesting if some of those songs were dropped from Sci-Fi.
That's an interesting theory and it may be true as we got the best of the best. I can't understand, though, how Sealed To Me wasn't released like Out Of Range was. Could have easily been a bonus track at least.

I know, especially given how many people have been dying to get their hands on it ever since they started in playing it live.

Just listened to Sealed to Me for the first time, and wow. What a beautiful, depressing, haunting and simultaneously uplifting song. God. Brings all the feels out to play together.

Man, 'Can't Get It Out' is really hitting me hard rn for some reason and I can't figure out why
Every time they launch into the chorus I get chills
"I want to tell you we're alright
Want to erase all your doubt"

“yeah the choruses on Deja are pretty bad”
dude I think the chrouses on Deja are easily the best thing about the album. Like I think Sic Transit’s verses are disjointed but the chorus is just amazing. Completely disagree.
