"Hm, no sure about that B-flat thing as most of the notes seem to be part of the natural minor scale in E imo. But nvm, these were the days when he still consciously planned and wrote interesting solos instead of improvising stale note salads by the numbers."
I was talking about the second solo, the really bluesy one that happens during the slower riff. It sounds like he's playing in a different key from the riffs themselves. But yeah, the first solo is in much more traditional Kirk territory

kirk knows enough about theory to constantly talk about it in interviews but apparently not enough to really put it to use in his solos
i know roam is in a different sort of scale than what they usually play... maybe the instrumentals?? all there stuff is based on this "metallica scale" they developed and never really deviated from, especially after the black album
all the most "different" sounding stuff scale-wise on the early albums are dave's riffs lol

The second solo is in G minor / blues scale

It’s definitely an interesting sound bc it shares most of the notes that the main riff is playing, but not all

I'd probably have this higher if the bass was more audible. Jason really got done dirty here, it's a real shame.

I used to have more of a problem with the lack of bass, but the production's grown on me over time. There's something about the dry mix and stoic atmosphere/aesthetic that fits the album really well

Funnily enough it's been the exact opposite for me lol, I used to not mind the thin guitars on this but over time they really grew off on me. I could certainly forgive the dry production here if the low end was brought out more. You absolutely can have both at the same time, and I've definitely heard some good examples of that being the case where the guitars have less of a punch, they're still backed by a solid bass production that helps to compliment it.

There's something esoteric about the beginning of Blackened. Easily one of the best tracks ever recorded.

there's something uncanny about the absence of bass on this record
it's almost as if the engineer knew he shouldn't bother putting any effort into this snoozefest atrocity

"it's almost as if the engineer knew he shouldn't bother putting any effort into this snoozefest atrocity"
As much as I love this album, that "shouldn't bother" part was probably true to a degree. I remember a few documentaries/videos that basically said Flemming Rasmussen had to concede a lot of production/mixing control to Lars because of how adamant he was to lower Jason's bass in the mix
But as I said, I still love the album regardless

The wonders of technology has made us able to conclude that this is a fine album with or without bass.
