'where are the breakdowns?' Haha
I'm (sort of) in the same boat, never understood why this is heralded as a masterpiece, but it's damn good at the very least.

Pink Floyd is like the ultimate band in the sense that people from all walks of life can find something they like most often. It's just damn pleasant to listen too.
They're not really awe-inspiringly great but they're never bad. Such a lovable band.

Hey it's not just me, I was replying to mort.
I don't know if my expectations were too high but this album has been with me for many years & it's never exceeded 'great'. As a (probably) fair comparison Closer to the Edge & (especially) Crimson King were more interesting experiences & both those albums pre-date this one.

I'm currently on 15-ish although no doubt there will have been rather large gaps in between without listening at all.

@mort: I'm older than Doof (I think) & jam death metal/Converge etc. regularly, so maybe there's hope.

Mort, check Wish You Were Here and Animals. They're better. And now I'm gonna leave while this thread tears me apart.

This album was insta-classic for me, and not just because of the reputation. It's not as complex or perhaps musically interesting as other prog classics of the time, but it's far more emotionally rewarding and atmospheric. In fact I don't think its useful to compare it to those other prog albums and I might not even call it prog at all, this is just very pure music to me, however pretentious that may sound. It aims for something completely different and if it hits you emotionally, it hits hard. Us and Them and Great Gig are easily two of the most emotionally poignant and diverse musical pieces of all time, Time has possibly the best lyrics ever penned, Breathe makes you feel high without the need of any substances; add to all that probably the best production job of any album ever and iconic status and you have the very archetype of a 'classic'

Mort - I still jam death metal / dark drum n bass / etc
Primarily my running / gym music
Check my lastFm - if it’s about 7pm and everything I’m playing is electronic and metal I’m down the gym
If it’s 11pm and I’m spinning Air or Rhye I’m fucking the wife.

You should stop listening to Enter Shikari at 21 though - that’s strictly just for snakebite drinking students

My dad first showed me this album when I was 7 and it went right over my head - revisited it at age 14/15 and fell head over heels for it, now it's one of my top 15 favorite albums of all time
