Just the fact that it was believable enough for one second to be real lyrics leaves me dumbfounded.

I've been stalked before, so the lyrics of Caramel hit me in a personal way. Yeah the songwriting isn't as good as Emergence and I still like that song more but Caramel is good

"the lyrics are just empty platitudes and idioms that don't say anything of substance"

Agreed, hard. Let's examine a peer in that sense: Fair to Midland. A band whose lyrics were comprised almost entirely of idioms. And yet their music was leagues more interesting than this band's.

Sleep Token really got that 1-2 punch of Bad Lyrics and Bad Songwriting. Not bad musicians, just bad songwriters. This feels like music that I would be fawning over if I was an emotionally-inexperienced kid in my 20s. But I've got....standards now? I can see right through them and how surface level their lyrics are? If an artist can't give their all into thoughtful, evocative, poetic, earnest lyrics, then why am I wasting my time? Might as well listen to Top 40.

Or: a reflection on how dumb it found you

idk I know I’m still a romantic after all these years and yea as ham-fisted as the lyrics are I’m glad I can think of someone to sing the lyrics to if I chose to

literally not meant to anyone specific but idk feels like the lonely boys of the internet can’t relate

After skimming the new single a bit, i can safely say: these guys are way better at an alt rock kinda sound and the metal/heavy stuff is so much weaker and kinda forced into the songs.

"then why am I wasting my time? Might as well listen to Top 40." ok but consider this: sometimes the top 40 has some heaters, i don't think we need to exact a superiority complex over radio pop music anymore, sometimes it hits sometimes it doesn't. it's not my first choice most of the time, but I GET why it's massively popular

"band's gonna be dead in the next year I'm willing to open a pool about it"

Probably not true at all. This is the only modern band that I see anyone reppin' their merch ever, and it's more popular than any other band at the moment (that I've seen), in the east coast, louisana, and even in the midwest. All the others are 2000s and 90s bands or even older.

Obviously does not include rappers, of course. I see Carti and xxx shirts a decent amount.

Given the 3 singles from their new album, it just feels like more of the same but played even safer. Fans will probably love it. I'm hoping for them to lean more into their bigger songs like The Summoning and Vore but this will be more of the R&B, with the odd *insert heavy bit* formula.

Potentially they are saving the banger heavy songs for the album but the singles have not impressed me too much. Emergence is good. The other two are terrible imo, and the “woe is me” lyrics fucking suck. You’re a massively successful band that is selling out stadiums and you wanna push this cryptic message that the hate your band gets is so unbearable. Fucking get over it, there are thousands of bands that would kill to be in your shoes

Vessel is definitely crashing out and probably has crippling anxiety disorder. Something I can very much relate to in that regard.

This is what the new Sleep Token wishes it was. And I say that as a Sleep Token semi-simp.

Shit band. Could absolutely NOT be a shit band, but perplexingly, they have refused to be good for like 6 years now or something. Easily capable of being fantastic - they just refuse to. The player talent is incredibly high, for sure.
