I'm usually very critical of positive reactions to Maynard's recent performances. This is the exception because he really brought it to town in this one

Neat. They haven't played that live since '98 according to https://www.setlist.fm/stats/tool-2bd6d836.html

I've been watching a lot of performances on this tour and Maynard really sounds better than he has sounded in the last at least 12 years, and that's coming from someone who is also very critical of his live output in the last few years.
He also sounded fantastic when I saw him with APC last year, so that gave me hope that he may be improving his technique and managing what's left of the power in his voice really well.

He hasn't done that since 2007

Sounds like he’s rejuvenated and inspired with Tool for the first time in a long time. Rather than phoning in performances, he’s actually emotionally involved. Probably was the process of recording a new album and going on the road for it. You know Maynard was sick as fuck about doing the same songs yet again.

Playing the same songs over and over has to be way more grating for a singer than the musicians.

How about replacing aenima for 46 & 2 and schism for the patient. But I don't wanna mess with the tool fanboys, so I'll leave it like that.

They play both aenima and 46+2 though

Yeah I think the furthest I drove for Tool shows were Charlotte NC to Memphis (about 11 hrs) and Charlotte to Tallahassee — both the Lateralus tour. I live in SoCal now though.

I once drove 12 hours from Fargo to Tulsa to see APC, so might as well drive 8 hours to see Maynard with his better band lol
