harvest is mostly barre chords and patterns 2 is pretty simple fingerpicking. just gotta have a capo.

Patterns 2 is severely underrated. I kinda wish that was the version that appeared on the main album instead of pt 1

Patterns 1 into BWP is so good... holy fuck I love the guitarwork on that song. I know the song is 12 mins long but there are like 10 show stopping moments there. Fucking insane

Then again, I'm also the guy who thinks Still Day Beneath the Sun should have replaced Harvest on the main album. Idk, I think the bonus tracks really got robbed this time around
Still a strong 4.5 album though

hard to listen to blackwater park (the song) without patterns preceding it. kinda like embryo+children of the grave

I just feel like such an outlier when it comes to Harvest. Everyone goes absolutely crazy for it, but it's honestly one of my least favorite "classic" Opeth ballads. It's the most predictable folk rock tune with nothing to make it stand out whatsoever, and it's also the sole reason I can't give BWP higher than a 4.5. I much prefer Benighted, To Bid You Farewell, Isolation Years, and most of Damnation

sure but it fits perfectly within the the context of the album. plus it has those sweet sw vocal harmonies.

"sure but it fits perfectly within the the context of the album"
I don't agree with that at all. If anything, it totally kills the pace that was set by Leper and Bleak. Going from Bleak straight into Drapery would have been a much more natural transition imo. Still a noticeable tempo change, but with plenty of twists and turns to keep things interesting (and still retaining the SW harmonies, I might add)

i think it’s a nice respite from the more heavy stylings of the tracks that it’s sandwiched between while still maintaining the very bleak (no pun intended) vibes of the album.

Same Kor, I actually kind of can't stand Harvest even. It goes on forever too, should have been about two to three times shorter.

Atmosphere on Harvest is perfect and it's a v necessary change of pace after the opening duo. Miles better than the ballads on the following few albums (unless we're counting A Fair Judgment)

Disagreed Johnny. Hours of Wealth might be my fave ballad. Isolation Years is definitely nicer too. Really love Burden as well.
Damnation is only ballads so let's not count that one and yeah let's not count A Fair Judgement either (aka one of their best tunes).

I'm counting every single track on Damnation other than Windowpane and stopping precisely when we get to Burden lol. Ghost Revs ballads are alright ig, feel a bit lightweight but not the same level of fluff as Benighted

Hmmmmmm ok yes in that case I think I agree a little bit more with you but not entirely but a little bit more anyway.
Damnation has Weakness which I love a lot and if Windowpane doesn't count there's not too much there that's better than Harvest I guess.

I stopped listening to BWP a few weeks ago right after Harvest was over, because I didn't feel the mood anymore. I guess it really did kill the pacing. I think it's beautiful, but it's so deeply sad, I have a hard time with it

We're actually discussing an Opeth album in here budgie, albeit not the one of the thread we're in. Care to join us? Say something about the transitions and percentage of prog while using the words 'snow' and/or 'cleans' and you're all set.
