Some sputnikkers do indeed nurture an unhealthy obsession with contrarianism.

enough to make a dent in 800+ ratings?

Yeah contrarianism is an issue, also a lot of people just give something a go due to the hype/wanting to see what the fuss is all about. The release in question hasn’t had the time to reach classic status, so people who dislike it immediately slap knee-jerk low scores on it without a 2nd thought, then they move onto the next release in an effort to hear a ludicrous no. of new releases/compile their AOTY ballot.

All time classics get a greater degree of ‘respect bias‘ imo, I reckon your average user is much more likely to slap a respectful rating on an all-timer than something that was just released, regardless of whether they like it.

I think too much.

ah yeah that insidious tendril of consoomerism... you're probably right about that angle tbh

i don't think "respectful ratings [...] regardless of whether they like it" should be a thing though, seems counter productive

"4.19 average is laughable for a generational masterpiece as this."

for RYM just add 0.5 to get the Sput score. 4.0 is a stone-cold classic there, 3.5 is a terrific release, but below 3 things tend to compress. it's just a huge, overly-picky userbase there so the scores are most useful in a "which album by x band should I start with?" context rather than "what's the best melodeath album of 2001?" as far as I can tell.

exactly how i do it lol. as pretentious as it sounds, RYM is the mainstream and often rates low and follows the crowd. Sputnik is much more specialized for gauging community response, especially to heavy releases

This is one of my favorite albums, don't really have a problem with 4.2. Hell, the greatest album ever made is only 4.3

t/t, Inversion, and Next Void are my faves on here. such a good overall play though -- I think the best song-to-song flow since Destroyers.
