Relistened to this recently. Damn, this album is good.
Nothing on the following 3 albums even come close to touching Burden or even Porcelain Heart.
The end of an era, this album.

It's incredible agreed, often overlooked (if that even applies to metal-phase Opeth)

So a legitimate question here... the song burden seems to get a lot of love... is there something I am missing here? Is it not an incredibly cheesy ballad that just doesn’t work? Honestly I am not being sarcastic or trying to shit on anyone’s opinion. I would genuinely like an explanation of what makes it good in the hope that I may one day appreciate it.

It is an incredibly cheesy ballad but it does work. And how. I love it. It's tongue in cheek, but also feels genuine, the melody is nice, the acoustic guitar is amazing, etc. It was them having fun.

Its a bit cheesy indeed...still my kind of cheese, aka better than any scorpions...This album is excellent, great vibe, great transitions. The only setback for me is that some tracks are constantly loosing its balance in advantage of dynamics...definitely Opeth having fun.
Heir and Hessian tho

Love this album. My first Opeth actually. The contrast between Coil and Heir Apparent blew my mind when I was 12

Burden after the fifth minute is so soothing and relaxing, top tier Opeth imo... just like the whole album really. This sat in a weird transitional spot for a long time but these days I'm almost tempted to say that it has become my favorite Opeth album. It just has everything plus its own quirks. With Derelict Herds you have 4 out of 8 growled songs and that's fine by me because they are so good, I don't mind the scarcity at all.
Morningrise still has the most ~magic~ tho
