kanye had just dropped mbdtf which was massively popular and brought a ton of ppl into hip-hop who weren't before (mostly because of p4ks 10.0), so this was naturally very abrasive for them, as well as a lot of hip-hop traditionalists. lyrically it's definitely easier to make fun of/significantly more controversial than mbdtf. plus critics were giving it a ton of praise which is always a reason to lash back, and this was 2013 when hip-hop was a lot less accepted by the internet music community. this was basically the perfect storm for controversy
