co-worker said "ST is a cult" the other day and my eyes are still stuck in the back of my head

actually not an unfair point to suggest that ST's R&B/trap game isn't their strongest point, i feel like the best track here goes into almost a blackgaze feeling and it's definitely the heaviest track. i think with these guys it's just they're a solid hybrid band that's overglazed and overhated in equal measure. one side thinks it's genius and the other thinks it's irredeemable AI (seriously, there's certain artifacts in AI music that this does not even come close to sounding like) slop, and I don't think either are true

that being said i think this album's the closest it's gotten to dropping a rating, this place will become your tomb had more moments that stuck with me

agreed this is just baby's first metal band for a lot of people and I hope it becomes a gateway into far better music for them

at least baby's first metal band back in the day used to have riffs and was heavy. i can easily see the slipknot to cannibal corpse pipeline, i can't see that with sleep token. yes i am a boomer.

tbh i partially credit being hyperobsessed with blackgaze to "vore" off this album bc it basically just sounds like a Deafheaven song Sleep Token-fied (i liked deafheaven before but the moment I put two and two together they instantly clicked), but perhaps for me the building blocks were always there ever since I fell in love with Envy and other screamy/post-rocky hybrid acts, and I was already into a lot of metal anyway. But I can see a ST to Blackgaze pipeline which can definitely lead to a lot more heavy stuff that's also super atmo

i could also theoretically see a sleep token to rolo tomassi, svalbard, oathbreaker pipeline entirely thanks to that same song

besides, even if there isn't a pipeline I really could not be asked to care lol the music scratches a certain part of my brain and the vox feel like they shouldn't work for me yet I find myself into it still. like he doesn't sound far enough removed from that indie dude style of guys like Isaac Wood so why am I into him? It's really weird but I like it

@venin I'm on the other side of the coin, I want to like his vocals but that scratch happens in the other side of my brain that just thinks it's cringe

all personal taste aside, this is the most unhinged take I've read on sputnik this month jfc

yeah it's more that I don't understand how this guy clicks for me yet I repeatedly have issues with other dudes with this exact same vocal style. I checked Cameron Winter's album and his warbly vocals annoyed me, but to me its bizarre that its everyone else EXCEPT Vessel that does this type of vocal I'm like "ehhhh". Isaac Wood on paper should really click for me considering I like this dude.

i mean there's a few differences, but I pretty much hear a strikingly similar deep-baritone warbly vocal style in a lot of indie/arty rock and some singer-songwriter albums...biggest difference being there is also some R&B influence mixed in here. i'm usually really hit-or-miss on deep baritone vocals, which both Vessel and Wood are - hell, that's exactly why I can't get into CORPSE or Type O Negative even though I have friends who like them.

this is why my enjoyment befuddles me - because he sounds like someone on paper I should be annoyed by, yet I'm not.
