Possibly their most underrated record. Goes hard as shit

Maturing as a human involves the recognition that this is indeed better than Jane.

That's a spicy fucking take and a wrong one lol. In fairness, you do you but man, that's not one I ever expected to hear. I still find this their most forgettable with a few amazing cuts here and there. Grim Heart/Black Rose is amazing and I have no idea why people shit on it so much

I respect it too but I’m in the “no fucking shot” camp as well.
There’s like 10 songs on Jane Doe that are better than anything here. And Jane ain’t even really my favorite of theirs anymore

Ya Grim Heart / Black Rose is phenomenal and the tension building throughout is amazing. I wouldn’t say it’s better than their other long songs (Eve and Jane Doe are certainly better, but I’d take this over Dusk In Us any day). Trophy Scars, Lonewolves, and Orphaned are all pretty fucking fire too.
Having said all that, this is by far Jacob’s worst vocal performance. His lighter shouts sound great but his harsher vocals have absolutely no variation and the songwriting just isn’t as interesting as I’ve come to expect from these guys. The first five songs all just feel like Kurt had a good idea for a riff and they built a little one minute song around it. It’s a fun start, but it’s the weakest opening to any Converge record.
Idk. I’d say this and Axe to Fall are most similar when we’re talking about their entire discography, and that record is much better than this one.
Still a damn good album, at their worst these guys are still better than 90% of other metalcore bands

I also think out of almost all Converge records, this actually has their weakest production by far. It sounds pretty muddled in a lot of areas. I'm listening now and can see myself with a bump to 3.5 since it's been a monumentally long time since hearing a lot of these tracks but still stands as one of their weakest records. That's pretty astounding that a 3.5 is one of their weakest though. Show how ultra talented they are

I think it says a lot when the production is honestly kinda close to YFM but they only remixed one of them…
And they don’t really play songs off this record live. I think maybe they don’t really care for it as much either.
Plagues is awesome too, almost forgot about that track. They opened with it when I saw them once and it was one of the wildest pits I’ve ever been in

I mean, playing Grim Heart / Black Rose as Blood Moon with Chelsea would’ve made sense, but instead they picked In Her Shadow and Wretched World… I know I personally think those songs are better 🤷♂️

Plagues is a ripper! That opening riff alone is filthy

Again tho man I feel like, aside from Cruel Bloom and Wretched World obviously, Axe to Fall just does everything they did here but better.
Then AWLWLB comes along and ripped both of them to shreds lol
Still, like Fear said, this being the band’s “worst album” is still fucking impressive. Most core bands wish they could drop something this good and it’s seen as underwhelming for a lot of Converge fans. The highs on this are ridiculously high but the lows just feel very by the numbers for these guys.

Axe to Fall is my favorite Converge record next to You Fail Me. Totally get the argument but I find the more straight forward approach is what I dig about this record

That’s really the thing that most clearly shows how great these guys are. You could call any of their albums their best and I think there’s legitimately an argument to be made for most of them…
These days I think You Fail Me is their best tbh, then Jane, then AWLWLB. After that I really have no idea how I’d rank it out. I was gonna do a Converge list but I’m gonna wait until they drop something new. I’m really hoping they still are trying to drop something this year, they’ve been playing new songs live. Hopefully we at least get a single soon.

Shit sucks a lot right now for a lot of different reasons, so yeah, new Converge would be very welcome right about now.

Jane Doe was always my favorite with You Fail Me as a close second but once that redux hit, the redux took over as my fav Converge record.

I get that people like the murkier production of the original, but man the redux hits so much better imo
And Wolves at My Door fucking rules
