someone on RYM summed it up perfectly:

"I'm just left disappointed. By all means, it's great that they want to try something new. I'm not a black metal fan in the slightest, and that extends to these guys, their blackgaze stuff does nothing for me, so I was actually quite excited to hear they were going off in their own direction. Yet all I got was a boring, subpar album that teased me with potential but never quite delivered. It's just a mounting disappointment, the more I type the lower the score will get so I'll just stop myself, I think my emotions are clear. What a shame."

I personally loved the 3 singles they put out so I kinda knew I would like the album unless it was something really different from those 3 songs.

^ this was the exact mindset I had going into this. To the point where if the rest of the album was literal fart noises I still would not have been disappointed in my purchase.

Great Mass is just next level

"It's because Holy Fawn made what this album should've been"

I love Death Spells but these two sound nothing alike.

so you're telling me this user doesn't like their blackgaze stuff, which is their entire discography, but was disappointed in an album from a band they never liked to begin with? RYM users truly never fail to show me how stupid people can be.

Why do you guys let melon live rent free in your heads? It's not 2014 anymore.

I was going to say the same, i was scratching my head after reading that, if you didnd't liked the band to begin with, what's there to be disappointed with? haha.

I know, but I'd say they're in the same category kind. Heavy shoegaze influences with mild screaming, and death spells does it way better than this. The songs are actually interesting the whole way through, not just the last 30 seconds like this album.

But yeah Great Mass is easily the best song on here. It's great.

As much as I love this whole album, Near is still their best shoegaze song

"I’m seeing Holy Fawn 9/22 let’s gooooo" I'd love to see how they translate their big fuck-off wall of sound approach to a live setting.

If they would’ve better blended the “blackened metal/harsh vocals” style with this new softer style, this could’ve been something special and unique sounding. Instead, they went 95% shoegaze with only a trace 5% of their old style.

hmmm I actually agree, that is holding my rating down a bit.. I like the tasteful screams, but it could have still been tasteful at 20%

Fantano is ok, his reviews are decent and/or entertaining most of the time I ever check one

The issue is people acting like he’s the ultimate authority on music and hanging off his every rating score and/or adopting his shtick themselves (‘…I’m feeling a light seven on this…’ etc)

I don’t blame Fantano for this

Fantano fans are people who can't form their own opinions on music and need the melonhead guru to tell them what's good and what isn't

That being said I do respect the guy and he does have a great mind for music, just sometimes his opinions are absolutely ridiculous and he seems biased towards genres he doesn't fully understand.
