I think calling something "over-produced" is a cop-out
also people associate things with production that have nothing to do with the producers role in the project

I’ve always maintained that 97% of the time when people call an album overproduced or criticize the production they’re actually talking about the songwriting

Ok maybe not with production in general but “overproduced” = “there are things about the songwriting I don’t like” 97% of the time

I prefer my music to be produced by a tooth brush under the banner of LO-FI

Yeah, this is a difficult record production-wise, because the sound design is impeccable, nearly flawless, and I think it also, without a doubt, strongly achieves the vision of the band, but much of what is being impeccably produced is counter-productive or superfluous.

"that term is so vague and I think often is used in place of other more fitting descriptors"
Hmmmm yes, although in this case it's annoyingly accurate because I don't have that much of an issue with the songwriting or arrangement song to song, but really do not like the aesthetic. Shit's as smooth as an existential smoothie in clingfilm and I wanna cut that shit open yknow
"But that’s more of a songwriting issue is it not? If it’s too busy and layered"
I'd call that an arrangement issue most of the time tbh, depends. Songwriting is such a broad category that it's better to be specific there - likewise, tone choice is its own thing, and more often tied to production, unless the songwriting specifically hinges around it (but this ain't no shoegaze alb). It is boring :]

If I can be so bold, I think I could solve most of this record's issues simply by cutting the band's budget in half.
