at my daughters HS jazz concert last night they played a version of freddie Freeloader and it was very well done, the trumpet player is the best HS trumpet player I have heard and crushed it

The fact that this album is so damn accessible is kind of a feat in itself. Definitely not his best and has that "baby's first jazz" quality to it, but a classic none the less. Crazy how the guy that orchestrated it would also go on to have Dark Magus in him.

I do think this is his best. I mean yeah it's accessible but that's modal jazz for you. Not every jazz album has to have dissonance and improvisation to be great. The melodies, playing and atmosphere on this is sublime.

Blue in Green is one of the greatest things ever written. An absolute stunner. Flamenco Sketches as well is absolutely unbelievable.

Probably should 5 this actually, I always listen to it and love it more than a fair old whack of other stuff.

I personally think this is his best maybe tied with In A Silent Way in that this one is both endlessly replayable and emotional. In A Silent Way is also amazing but that one definitely has a different mood associated with it just super mellow and nocturnal jazz fusion and a big liminal empty space early post rock vibe I really dig.

@Reefa: You're wild if you don't think this has improvisation on it. I do prefer many of his more energetic works though. You just don't get moments like Footprints off of Miles Smiles here.

It might have improvisation but the improvisation is very structured and centered around a main theme. I'm not a music theorist but the improvisation on here is very different than free jazz for example.

The improvisation on here is akin to a guitar solo on a rock song. That's not what I was talking about though.

I like jazz I just don't like when they force dissonance into it in a way that doesn't feel thoughtfully applied to me
