imo
Top Tier National:
You Had Your Soul
Quiet Light
The Pull of You
I Am Easy to Find
Where Is Her Head
So Far So Fast
Rylan
Light Years
Good but has problems:
Oblivions
Hey Rosey
Hairpin Turns
Not In Kansas (too long but the piano parts are incredible)
Bad:
Roman Holiday
Dust Swirls
the interludes that have no business being on here

I agree that slew of nonstop midtempo numbers from 2-7 is the major weakness here, if you cut out Holiday, Rosey, and Pull the album would be just over 50 minutes overall and would probably flow even better, I could forgive even the interludes and “Dust Swirls” in that case.

Actually, I think I figured out the big problem in the sequencing: Too many of these songs sound like late album tracks. I keep on thinking about how I would move things around but the problem is I want almost everything closer to the end.

'Too many of these songs sound like late album tracks.'
It's that same 'every song with an epic finale coda and fade with strings and cooing wordless vocals and slowly deconstructing drums' problem.
It's an addiction - blame the Dessner's and their pesky soundtrack ways.

Great review, Rudy. I haven't been able to check out much of this yet, but the samples sound promising. Maybe reminiscent of Boxer?

It’s sad that Local Natives released a (very solid) album a few weeks ago and it got 1/3rd the attention this is getting.
What’s this have to do with The National you say? Leave me alone.

“Pull Of You” is maybe their worst song ever

Definitely enjoyed this album quite a bit, but its nonetheless a real letdown considering who made it. It's no Boxer that's for sure.

Rowan, I track rated this on RYM, right now I put Pull as a 2/5, the last six albums there’s not a single other song I rate below 3.5/5. The debut I remember being average but I don’t think it had anything poor. Maybe I’m being harsh but for now Pull seems a major turd by Natty standards.

I'm so over this band tbh, their sound is only good for 2-3 albums after that it just sounds recycled.

Gotta agree with Boney’s take on Pull of You. Structurally and sonically it’s so unsatisfying.

"Pull of You" is tentatively my favorite here...!
The messiness scratches an itch for me I guess

Yeah was just gonna say, Pull isn't that bad at all

found one thing that doesn’t work for me: the vocal pause in “hey rosey” is quite aggravating. rest of the record is the smoothest pleasure
