"Stating you find someone only has an ok voice according to your personal taste doesn't seem like one of my most controversial but I guess this is a Devin Townsend thread."
I mean you went on to say it actively ruined the music. You started just by saying you didn't like it, but it certainly didn't end there.

I said his vocals 'rarely actively ruin the music' so the opposite of what you just said :/
I've never said anything worse than they're 'ok' to me
Blob - I would agree his vocals suit the SYL approach more yes, but that isn't really the focus here as I was concentrating a bit more on the style of this album and his stuff recorded under his own name.

We have made sure this is the no.1 trending album on the site - I'm taking some credit for that.
Dev can thank me later.

I wonder how many artists actually read the reviews on this site. Like how big is the chance that Devy himself is one of the roughly 20k views from this.

doesn't the guy from Vektor actually comment on sput?

Checking Casualties of Cool first listen - he def had to bring in the female vocal foil.
Most of what Dev does with his voice is breathy and nice enough with a lot of echo applied but again, not amazing vocals from him so far. Think the album will need a few goes, I like the sound but the impact is starting to dull.

the female singer's latest solo album is amazing btw

Owh I didn't rec it because of devy's vocals at all. I just think its an amazing vibe overall and very consistently great. One of his best works imo.

CoC is the best Devy of this decade probably. Overall, I only prefer Terria and City.

If he did and bothered with the comments, be asured that he won't return.

"actually I think that might just be his weakest facet, his singing always comes off as a big effort and somehow 'off' - not a natural singer for me"
You've tempered now but this is a pretty big oof for the Doof. And saying his voice has no personality, yikes

Meh
I’ve said all I need to say on it, no world beater as a vocalist imo

It's pretty apparent he's the best vocalist of the past 25 years but okay
Doof, genuine question - how do you reconcile your hatred of cheese with your love of Anathema? Untouchable especially, I mean that song could be a Devin track for all its new age cum heavy rock sensibilities and overwrought, emotionally compromising vocal delivery - with even worse lyrics than Devy's (admittedly questionable) lowest literary moments. But above all, dat CHEESE! (the song is excellent, for the record)

I’m not a slave to logic I guess - I like Anathema a lot despite them being cheesy
Maybe I’ve just been into them a long time going back to Judgement.
They do transmit emotion effectively for me whereas got to be honest I don’t get that from Dev.

Fair enough, I can only emphasise that I'm into Dev for the exact same reason - IN SPITE of the cheese. Think it's a natural byproduct of emotional honesty anyway, which I'm far more drawn to than something polished, neatly packaged yet sterile.

I guess I should emphasise again this is the first negative rating I’ve given to a Dev release (though I know a lot of the recent stuff would get similar treatment if I sat down with it) - I do think the bloke has a lot of talent and a good ear for composition

Anathema and Devy do extremely different types of cheese though
Anathema are very earnest about it whereas Devy is usually at least a bit tongue-in-cheek
I can understand liking one but not the other (though I love both)
