I mean....did Rundgang *really* need to be 25 minutes long?

I remember someone saying Varg's idea behind the track was to illustrate the tedium of prison in the form of a song and I was just left thinking "that's not a good thing"

"the track was to illustrate the tedium of prison"

The album was recorded before his imprisonment.

It's a shame because if the track was like 2 or 3 minutes then this would be my fav Burzum by a big margin but alas. I know I can just skip it but if I'm expected to ignore like 40% of an album to enjoy it I'ma take some points off

@garas yeah I thought that defence was a bit reaching and when you point that out lol

I'm sorry :|

"I can just skip it" Sometimes I also skip it, but when I'm in the right mood, Rundgang is really...mesmerizing(?). I can't really describe that feeling.

I mean, I *like* it. It's a nice ambient track. But I always find myself eventually checking the clock to see how much time is left, and I'm always at, like, only the eleven minute mark lol.
Opener is perfect though. And every other track is close, anyway.

I might have even liked it if it were just a standalone track to drift off to, but I guess as part of a metal album it kills the momentum. Being followed by only one more track doesn't really seem like a worthwhile payoff either.

never understood songs like that clocking in so long. a lot of Swans songs are the same way. like....why stop there? why not repeat for 30 minutes, or 12 minutes? the runtime ends up seeming so arbitrary

none of the 8+ minute Swans songs drone to this degree, though. they might have long segments of repetition but eventually change enough to be recognizable. in some cases they even sound like distinct songs. Rundgang is almost the same thing for twenty five minutes, add a couple more bloops and bells here and there.

Today I listened to Rundgang when I took a long walk in solitude, while enjoying the snowfall - and I must confess, it was a totally new experience. Just me, my footsteps on the fresh snow, frosty air, and that simple, mesmerizing melody...
