honestly I don’t even think of this as hip-hop, I consider it the same genre as aphex twin or autechre lol, it’s just hypnotic idm beats from the future with a spastic alien making noises over it

I love that perspective and agree. Approaching this like traditional hip hops a mistake

i remember particularly not vibing because i would get taken out of it by social media references, the facetime one apparently bugged me a lot back then, idrk why but that's always just bothered me, literally i don't want to hear a song in any genre that openly references like twitter or something

also may have been spiteful bc the reception felt so overwhelmingly "this is a masterpiece" but the lyrical content isn't any different from other trap albums I've heard

the proliferation of redundant and/or nonsensical genres is a cancer to music

i think the hype went badly over my head when this dropped and it annoyed me that it was being talked about as some forward thinking masterpiece to rival TPAB or Illmatic when lyrically it's just dumb fun. And thats okay, just promote it as fun and it'll be easier to get on board lol

I feel like Carti fans are self aware in their ridiculous antics, or at least one would hope.

lol is this the prevailing opinion here? pretty much never interacted with his music outside of parties and the occasional memes.

maybe i haven't dug deep enough but he always just came off to me like future for zoomers.

He is essentially that. Tbh, his producers have always carried him.

"no one has ever said that" when this album came out ppl in a server i was in flooded the chat with "this is a generational masterpiece" type comments and I had to see what the hype was about and came away completely confused lmao. and you have it 5'd, to me that reads that you herald it as a masterpiece for the ages which I mean fair enough

may bump this further, music has made this seem like a sophisticated jewel in retrospect
