Number two record of the year for me, for sure. I feel like my love for Japanese folklore helps the staying power of this one

Part of me really wants to enjoy this album more than I currently am, but something holds me back. That’s not to say that it’s not great, I really enjoy it, but it seems like they do everything really well without ever breaking into a higher tier, if that makes any sense? A big part of that is wanting more variety in the vocals. Outside of the screams, I feel like they all convey the exact same emotion and drone a little bit. Which I’m surprised to say, because the vocals on Tigers on Trains are one of my favorite things about the band. I think Maggio’s voice fits that style more than here.
With that being said, still a solid 4-4.1 for me! Dialogues might be my song of the year. I have a love/hate relationship with Colored Out. It’s a great song, but breaks my immersion from the album a bit. I think I would love it more if it were on an Anberlin record (which isn’t a dig, Anberlin is one of my favorite bands) or even on this year’s Wonder Years record.

I like this OK, but I'm not in love with it. Probably my favorite album cover of the year though.

damn, that was good. so many lyrical gems here. could see this going to a 4.5 at some point.

For some reason I wasn't really expecting this album to resonate with me like it actually does. I tend to get bored with acclaimed indie rock/punk/post-hardcore albums these days but there's an x-factor on this record that really grabs me. I'll be exploring this back catalogue for sure.

Check Tigers On Trains too. Folk duo project from two members of this band. Grandfather and Foundry are essential, Antarctica is very optional imo.

The one-two punch of "The Canyon" and "Bask" was definitely one of the better ways to open an album in 2018

Still think Sundials chorus is too saccharine

It's so hard for me to listen to this without Amaterasu :'(

I talked to Billy from the band around the time of this release and asked him about some of the b-sides (specifically Amaterasu) and he basically said that while they liked all the tracks, that there were reasons for certain more "sugary" tracks making the final cut (basically, I inferred that they're still trying to get their big break and that they felt certain songs here might be better attention-grabbers). While I personally think that Amaterasu and Thurisaz could have displaced a song like Northern Orthodox or Sundials, I totally do not fault their decision making as a band that's basically been semi-popular for a decade now and still hasn't "broken out".

Well, I love Northern Orthodox so much, but yeah I think Amaterasu is their best song
