huge kubrick fan too but the first two acts have a shout for most unnecessary parts of any movie ever and act II specifically has some of the most pathetic excuse for character development I've ever seen in my life, all the dialogue in that film is pretty fucking awful

act III is legendary of course but it's still one of his worst films imoimo

nah its totally necessary dude the aliens or whatever were sending signals to accelerate our evolution, or rather lead it in an optimal direction

like there was not a single extraneous scene in that film unless you count the artsy spaceship sequences but they were just pretty

they could have covered over literally the entirety of act II by saying "a monolith was found on Mars' moon" but instead we got twenty minutes of insufferable talking and useless long shots just to get to the amazing revelation WOW THAT THING THAT WAS AT THE START WITH THE APES IS ALSO ON THE MOON it's the worst

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey

2.The Shining

3. A Clockwork Orange

4. Barry Lyndon (if only because every shot in that film is basically a renaissance painting, I watched it with my jaw dropped the first time I saw it, amazingly beautiful)

Pretty much agreed with Rowan about 2001, it's a pretty pointless and meandering film from what I remember. Admittedly though I only watched it once.

It's meandering but not really pointless. Sorta like ambient music, lol)))

Rowan, "act II by saying "a monolith was found on Mars' moon"" - but this is a film, and like ALL good film (especially a film by Kubrick, a visual director) you are not allowed to "say", you have to "show".

I would counter-argue that ALL good film knows when it's wasting its audience's time with useless garbage and ALL good film goes for subtlety rather than straight exposition for its first hour
