"Legitimately some of the worst vocals I've heard in my entire life"
Fuck off I love her voice

I don't really listen to Pop music, I can appreciate bluntness but again it's been done better on other albums (The Holy Bible)

"Legitimately some of the worst vocals I've heard in my entire life"
Wow someone found a way to complain about this album and be wrong at the same time
Didn't even know that was possible
Like tbh sometimes the vocals are somewhat annoying but it's usually because the lyrics being betrayed can make them sound grating or pretentious. Overall, fantastic voice.

'This... what? Any ninth grade writing exercise could pull a whole history's worth of context to a song like "4 Degrees" or "Obama."'
If you can get a 9th grader years from now to be able to get an impression on Obama as a president through his entire political career beyond the singular "he spied on people" bullet point then I'd be impressed.

' I'm arguing that that intent should not be to justify the album's existence as political art, but as the personal conflicts of a politically minded person extrapolated into a pop music project'
I get that you're arguing this, but it's hard as a listener to "appreciate" the personal conflicts of Anohni and her political views when she is presenting it at a level even more basic than other pop music projects. She is hitting bullet points that wont do anything for people who already agree with her nor will make people look at stuff in a different way if they're on the fence in ideology. It's hard to justify this album in anything it wants to do because it doesn't appear to be an album that can do much.
Anohni seems well articulated and smart in interviews and self write ups, but she cannot write that into pop music. Hell, there was a lot more depth to her work on her last band than there is here and a fair share of that work was some form of chamber pop.

Also I don't hate everything on this album, I think songs like Watch Me work a lot more than songs like Obama or Drone Bomb Me. But that's also because the scope of what she is talking about is small enough to justify how their applied to a pop song, even if she still isn't saying anything profound and the problem I brought up in my last post still stand.

This isn't political commentary or whatever, it's the equivalent of liberals reading news they just read on Twitter and then complaining about it like they know everything about the subject

"Liberals reading news they just read... Complaining about it like they know everything about the subject"
Didn't know this applied just to liberals, as far as I've seen, many conservative dimwits pull the same shit day to day.

He said that because the album is liberal-minded, like, far left, not because he's attacking liberals ffs.

I understand but the same standard applies to many politically minded people.

Yeah but we're not talking about in general we're talking about _this_ album

You say it like I don't already know that

What you said simply made it sound as if it applied just to one group, but I disgress. At least we can all agree it's a severely underwhelming album.
