When I was underway on my ship, a number of people in the kitchen (a.k.a. galley) were metalheads, and I'd jam Opeth on the speakers while I was doing my night shift on kitchen duty m/

Although there are some songs in BWP that combines death growls and melodic singing in the same song.

It took me ages to realise that the melodic singing in Bleak's chorus is actually Steven Wilson, not Akerfeldt.

This was years ago, when I was about 16. My hearing has developed considerably since then lol

About the Blackwater heavy/melodic singing comment... Don’t most Opeth albums contain such things?

Yes but my point is in their first albums were more death growls than melodic singing I think it was with this album that Mikael gave emphasis to melodic singing.

I know what you mean but in comparison to orchid, that album was 90% death growls and 10% melodic, while blackwater park is more 50-50

Just spun the vinyl yesterday and it hit me once again how powerful and emotional this dark beauty is. Best Opeth right here, period. Only Ghost Reveries comes close.

Some days I'm inclined to agree but then I remember Still Life exists, still it's splitting hairs either way, both are top Opeth material. GR has actually been growing on me hard recently as well.

The lyrics on this have such an Edgar Allan Poe ghost story vibe to them. The imagery and atmosphere are perfect

Yeah, I suppose that last album had quite a few questionable lyrical choices
