"What excess!? What they hell is at excess about this release, or the way they do their thing exactly fucktard?"
This is essentially a progressive metal album and therefore part of one of the most excessive genres ever to emerge. Most of the metal sections, the songwriting, and epic/awesome/whatever vibe and scale of the whole thing are excessive. As before, I get the appeal - I like a lot of prog metal that I consider gloriously excessive. However, this just comes across as boring and contrived to me.

Plagues

To each their own then. I certainly don't feel that way, let alone about a whole sub section. Progressive=excessive...... The way peoples minds work -_-

I did not equate the two, I just said that progressive music tends towards being excessive, just like hardcore tends towards being aggressive.

Actually, a fairer comparison would be metal tending towards being aggressive. Prog isn't always excessive, but it has a habit of veering towards ridiculous levels of self-indulgence, which I consider 'excess.'

My main issue with this album is that it's really not easy to listen to the whole thing, but each individual track is very strong. Production needs work though.
Still very good, but far from a masterpiece.
|
| |
What's your issue with the production?
|
| |
"No, I'd stick with the hardcore/aggressive comparison. All hardcore has an aggressive quality, not all metal does."
That's why I changed it; not all prog is obviously excessive.

Well, to sum up album averages on sputnik from my experience on the site:
If something's 4,1 - it's usually really 4,1
If something's 3,6 - it's usually like 3,3
If something's 3,8 it's either like 4,1 or like 3,5
And if something's 4,3 - 4,6 it's way fucking overrated
