Patton is the king of terrible musical influences, that's his whole subversive shtick, but you need an actual band to hang that hat on, FNM are such a band and the concept works.
With Bungle mixing all those irritants (circus music, cheesy lounge, shitty bursts of noise/metal) is just wankery in the main...hence their albums get a 3/5. Technically fine, a few good songs, but basically it's all in joke genre experiment nonsense.

"In joke genre experiment nonsense" is a good category for some of my favorite music haha

I've rated it a 3/5 so I'm actually not hating, there's nothing wrong with technically accomplished jokey genre experiment stuff
I just don't love the genre

Nah, with the exception of Angel Dust, Disco Volante and the s/t ate better than all of FNM's album, and California has to be the best Patton thing in general

I mean this might be his best but it's not the most enjoyable ya feel
FNM had a lasting impact on the scene of the 90s, Bungle is pretty much forgotten apart from Patton purists

Weird thing is I heard no circus music on California, anyways california is some of Patton's best work, and widest display of his vocal range I love this album. BTW King for a day is a pretty Bitchin' FNM album too.

Who cares if FNM was more popular? Of course they were, they were more commercial

California has the least amount of circus music out of the 3 Mr. Bungle albums, but it's still there.

California doesn't have the circus music, that's more the s/t
