Don't agree obviously. I think Neige's cleans are completely fine for what they need to do. Of course they aren't on the same level of awesome as his harsh vox, but they're far from lifeless to me.
His harsh vox are very high up there. He's got one of the best shrieks in the business.

the only time where his cleans have actually worked for me is shelter where they aren't overshadowed by anything and are sometimes even able to actually carry the music due to its lightness

Ecailles’ t/t has prob my fav cleans on any song(s) ever.

Neige's cleans do more for me than his screams tbh, his trademark wordless chanting (throughout Souvenirs, on Ecailles t/t and Kodama t/t for example) takes me to another world

Both his cleans and his shrieks are awesome

Neige's shrieks on .neon are insane. I've grown to love his cleans more and more with every year though. One of the most comforting voices, and they blend in perfectly with the music. Of course he wouldn't be the right choice for super catchy, vocal-centric music. But I don't see what you would replace them with in Alcest's style of music.

Yeah .neon is phenomenal. I'm getting into Alcest but Kodama took a while to grow on me.

"Yeah .neon is phenomenal. I'm getting into Alcest but Kodama took a while to grow on me"
Personally i don't think Kodama is their best effort, luckily all their albums have quite a different atmosphere so you should find something you like

"luckily all their albums have quite a different atmosphere"
do they though?

They definitely have

it's all pretty much a lull to me, but it's a good lull nevertheless

You can't honestly tell me Souvenirs, Kodama and Shelter are the same "lull". He maintains a certain style of writing melodies, but they differ in (edit: sub-, admittedly)genre, production, song structures etc.

"He maintains a certain style of writing melodies"
this is the key right here. melody plays a HUGE part in creating atmosphere in this kinda music and when you use the same technique to do it, you're bound to get similar results atmospherically

But in that case, every cover of a song would always be bound to have the same atmosphere as every other cover and the original, which is just not true. A vague similar feeling remains (in Alcest's case, that airy dreamy flair), but that's not the point. It certainly doesn't hinder Shelter and Kodama from being completely different albums in different genres and with different atmospheres.

"But in that case, every cover of a song would always be bound to have the same atmosphere as every other cover and the original, which is just not true"
right, because what i said was that melody is the only thing affecting on the atmosphere
also shelter is obviously very very different in its approach, i would close that album out of this argument
but that airy feeling like you said (the base of that atmosphere present on their albums), it's what they go for on most of their albums through similar musical structures and melodies (both instrumental and vocal). the production has naturally progressed throughout their career which makes a difference for sure though, i'll give you that

All of their albums have completely different atmospheres to me; you can't hear the difference between the vernal, folk-y woodland shoegaze of Souvenirs and the dark, moonlit post-black metal sea that is Ecailles? In fact the only one I would particularly describe as 'airy' (although I think 'bright' is more fitting) is Shelter, which you obviously can't exclude from the argument as its a fifth of their discog lol. Seeing as it's not the only album without screams, I don't think it's as much of an outlier as people often think
