For sure, this is probably a top 5 album for me. Every song is a hard jam on here.

Meshuggah are one of those bands that my friends have always seemed to enjoy more than I do. Partially, I think I just don't really care for this more "brutal" attempt at death metal that they are inclined to err towards, but also I haven't yet seemed to find an appreciation for Djent, instead viewing it as a sort of a circus attraction of guitar music. Like the genre is named for the twangy noise that fartly detuned guitar strings make as the whip around aimlessly, too often focussing on that stupid floppy sound that my freshman year roommate's guitar with the low E string replaced by a bass string so he could detune it to more than an octave below the original pitch which the 15W Spider III amp had a real hard time recreating with any timbre more sophisticated than a dull rumple which seemed to not bother to change despite a genuine attempt to fret different notes. Well, if I can get that out of my system I might actually come to at least passively enjoy this stupid genre some day and as it turns out if I put nigh decade old misgivings behind me that there is some value to be found in this genre. Nothing harkens back to the early 2000's, a period notorious for Nu-Metal and all things hilariously bad, but Sweden's Meshuggah seemed hellbent on avoiding most of those painful American cliches. Instead I actually seemed to enjoy this one: a host of unconventional time signatures modulate the sound more like FM than AM radio, in that phonically the album is extremely monotone, but rhythmically varied in a way that keeps me on my toes and commands a bit more attention than I seemed to bother to give Djent in the past. And, while a heatmap of guitar notes would reveal that low F# gets most of the love, there is enough riffy constructivism to promote it to perhaps the next rung or two above 16 year old at guitar center beating the hell out of that schecter 7-string at max gain and a way too high volume. I don't know if I can quite yet boldly claim myself a Meshuggah fan, but I'm certainly closer after giving Nothing an honest spin.

This one sounds way better, IMO. The only song that really benefited from the original production was "Spasm" (which is one of my all-time favorite Meshuggah songs).

I've always preferred the original, perhaps because I listened to it so much when it came out that I came to think its sludgy, muddy, bassy sound suited the slower tempos and heavier musical approach (compared to Chaosphere). The re-release is cleaner and clearer, but I think it lost most of its unique atmosphere and character in favor of sounding like every other tech/djent production out there today.
