When my dad was in law school, he listened to this album over and over and over. He gave me a copy when I was getting into music, but I never listened to it because I disliked his taste. Turns out the joke's on me. This album fucks.

Incidentally, I called him the other day to confess my sin and tell him how The Dan was my newest crush, but he was just like Oh cool, I don't know any of their other albums tho. He liked Aja and that was good enough for him. So now *I'm* trying to get *him* to check them out.

I'm sure I don't like everything about this band (Fagen in particular seems to be an old-school dick), but surely their run from debut to here or Gaucho stands as one of the best, most consistent in all of rock music

I'm honestly fucking bummed that I didn't listen to these guys until more recently... knowing now how good their music is, I would have loved to see them before Walter Becker passed away

Not to mention, I would have loved their music as a kid, when I was getting into a whole bunch of classic rock and prog bands

Also, listening to Home at Last for the first time was a complete mindfuck. My saxophone teacher Arte was in a band called Jazz Junkies and I owned one of their live records, which had that song. I went for an entire decade wondering if it was a cover or one of their originals, only to find it on this album in 2021. Crazy, lol

yeah the dan are kinda on the "do not enjoy" list for young music fans, its too smart/jazzy for most proggers (no dragon/elves lyrics), too proggy for people who tend to enjoy the subversive lyrics (mostly punk/indie fans). you have to work hard to get people to check them out and when they do check them out it doesnt "rawk" enough. in conclusion, everyone's retarded except us

i got into them in 2016 when i started drinking more, the band really speaks to me. i truly believe these are the only lyrics in rock/pop that can compete with actual works of literature

no disrespect to bands like rush and gentle giant that tackle heavier subjects, but they generally arent masters of subtlety. steely dan have more nuance, better characterization, and they leave some mystery like a great poem or story should

i still got my ticket to see the band in 2022, lets hope it happens. i think we should see some outdoor gigs by end of summer into fall. which sucks for smaller bands who have been hit hardest by all this stuff, but the truth is gorguts just cant fill out an amphitheater. i would like to see more small venues work on setting up some outdoor sections but thatd be hard to do especially after over a year of zero income. its pretty much just the waiting game for those fuckers sadly, but im hoping i can make some phish shows this year if they dont cancel. might see megadeth and judas priest too

its very hard for rock lyrics to sound smart since its usually like, a 22 year old kid full of hormones writing them lol

you touched on something really based though... a lot of "writing" in media that isn't literature tends to get praised for simply daring to tackle certain subjects, regardless of how well its done, even if its as subtle as a brick through the window... not just in music but film, tv, video games... oops, stepping on too many toes today maybe [:

yeah good example is the joker. not a bad movie but merely being like "mental illness, dude." isnt enough to be smart. or maybe it is now
