The guitar work on Thuja Magus Imperium is a huge step up from Black Cascade. That album was too much about atmosphere, sacrificing interesting songwriting for head-in-the-clouds epics. CL changes things up on a minute-to-minute basis with intertwining guitar lines and huge synths (a la Two Hunter) instead of incendiary buzzing and barely-there drums. The shorter songs in the middle are a nice change of pace too, after having 12 songs on the last three albums.
Oh yeah, and Aaron Turner's in on it. m/ cred with the shoegazers.

I agree, though, that the "supporting columns" at the beginning and end are the best part of this, and axing the filler tracks wouldn't have hurt. Though I cringed a bit at the rating, a well-written review.

Yeah, people seem to be divided on this album. But when I ask people why they give a rating (such as this) they either say it's because of lack in progression or that Two Hunters is better.
Both of which are utterly moronic
