“Personally, when I hear something as crap as Defeater, or Skrewdriver, I like saying that they are a huge pile of rancid
shit, perhaps even adding that their fans are sexual deviants with shrivelled gonads. Just like when I hear The Mountain
Goats I love saying that they're the most awesome fucking thing since chocolate covered boobs. Politeness is about the
worst thing humanity has ever produced, because it's all so false.”
And we now have our definition of musical elitist.
p.s. not very familiar with Mountain Goats, and will check out. Maybe I will understand where you are coming from
more with your opinions on music.

"The fact that you think you're in some elite echelon does nothing but massage your ego."
Phlebas I have appreciated some of your discourse on these topics. It has been interesting to see contrasting view points, however, the only person I see with a need to boost their ego is the one who goes out of his way to put down other people with differing opinions. You even go out of your way to review many albums negatively, to show off how clever you can be while trashing music

Wow, what was I thinking talking about music and they way we review things on a music review site.
I can guarantee nobody is really going to look at comments that are over fucking 2 paragraphs long each time you post making the thread retarded.
| | | nobody except you and the two guys having the discussion i guess
and you'll be here to continuously post about not reading them because them because that makes the thread look really good

I like this. You might not. But I do. Just my opinion. Don't worry, yours is valid too!

Putting people down and insulting them is not the same thing, especially when the insult is true. You've repeatedly, explicitly made it clear that you believe your opinion to be of more worth than others, whereas I have repeatedly made it clear that my opinion is just one amongst the throng. Your position places you in some imaginary realm where you have the right to dictate opinion; that's egotism, chap, sorry. How do I go out of my way to review albums negatively? I hear music that I dont like at work, with friends or on the radio and, sometimes, if I feel I have something interesting or entertaining to say I'll spend a little time listening to the album and thirty mins writing a short review. If I was worried about my ego, I'd give positive reviews to all the shit the fanboys drool over and bask in the wonder that is sputnik's pos system. Or do you think I have an overactive death drive which likes to gets negged by fanboys?

And we now have our definition of musical elitist.
You called my opinion of this album laughable because it didn't revolve around advanced music theory. When I take the piss out of somone for liking a band, it's just taking the piss, not some belief that I'm better than that person. When my mates rip on me for liking New Found Glory, do I give a shit? It's better that, than have them blankly acknowledge the things I see in the band. How can I be elitist, when I freely admit I'm exactly equal with every other person who can simply hear music?

I think you like the challenge of writing such a brilliant review with so many sarcastic and witty comments, that even people who completely disagree with your rating are forced to admit that you are a great writer. You are obviously a great writer, much better than me I might add, but to call me the elitist is off. Just because we disagree on a point doesn't make either of us elitists. If that were the case than everyone is an elitist, because we all disagree about something. I appreciate your on-topic discussion, but am growing tired of the inevitable hostility that appears in these threads.

Hopefully a neutral observation here. It is funny how arguments tend to evolve so quickly from stating two differing opinions, and then inevitably progress to personal attacks, losing all sight of the initial points of discussion. Like I said, hopefully a neutral observation, as all parties seem guilty as charged.

It might surprise you, but I've disagreed with a few people in my life, and you're the first person I've ever called an elitist. If I'd given this ep a 5 review, and agreed with every point you made in your review, I'd still call you an elitist. It has nothing at all to do with disagreement, and everything to do with the fact that you place the fraction of humanity that has studied music theory above everyone else in the world. The fact that my opinion was based around a decade of familiarity with the band and genre meant nothing. Because I didn't see the patterning that you describe with college-level theory, my opinion was literally so worthless it was deemed to be laughable. On top of this, you talk about what people should be allowed to say and think, as if you have any right to dictate such things. You think because you've learned some theory you're better than me and the billions of people who don't know a damn thing about it. Thinking that you're opinion is better, that you're part of some group that operates at some higher level makes you elitist.
edit: making out that 'elitist' is some hurtful insult is ridiculous by the way. Every kid probably goes through a stage where he thinks he knows more than someone else. But most don't try and back their's up with supposedly objective 'facts'.

On a half shell they´re the heroes four
In this day and age who can ask for more
The crime wave is high with muggings mysterious
All police and detectives are furious
Cause they can´t find the source
Of this lethally evil force
This is serious so give me a quarter
I was a witness get me a reporter
Call April O´Neill in on this case and you better hurry up
There´s no time to waste
We need help like quick on the double
Have pity on the city, man its in trouble
We need heroes like the Lone Ranger when Tonto came pronto
When there was danger
They didn´t say We´ll be there in half an hour
Cause they displayed
Turtle Power!

| | | lol at calling Phlebas an elitist, of all people (why is he, again?!)...
we don't see eye to eye all the time, but he's one of sputnik's more sincere posters I think, as well as having a pretty defined taste before he got here, which is uncommon... pretty un-elite if you ask me.

Thanks, Sea - I appreciate that, man. I can be a prick sometimes, but elite... I'm far too big an ABBA fan for that.

I never called your review laughable. I called your assertion that BTBAM's music didn't have structure laughable. It was a response to a comment you made, not your review. I don't think that I am better than anyone. I don't think that knowing music theory makes you better at judging music. Most of all, I certainly don't want to dictate what anyone says or thinks. Over the course of this nonsense, I have only being trying to argue 3 ideas.
1. I argued that there was structure to BTBAM's music
2. I argued that objectivity plays at least some role in critiquing music, shown in the way we even rate music with a hierarchal numbering system.
3. I argued that the stronger rating people give an album, they should be able to back up with stronger arguments; more than just with "this is awesome", or "this is shit".
I see that you completely think that music critique and the human response to music is subjective. I disagree, but you are very entitled to your opinion. I don't think mine is better than yours, or vice versa. My third assertion wasn't made with any intent of showing superiority over anyone. I think most people would agree that people should back up their claims. I see a lot of people complaining about "fanboy" ratings on this site.
So we disagree. Great. Observer called it a while ago. This argument is not going anywhere so lets both move on.
