So yeah, awesome album. As a whole I prefer it to Miss Machine, but I still like Panasonic Youth and Sunshine the Werewolf better than anything on OP.

Loving Widower, I Wouldn't If You Didn't, Crystal Morning and Room Full of Eyes the most on here.

This is better than Ire Works but doesn't really have anything on the Calculating, Miss Machine, or the EP. Each of those blew my mind when they came out. While this wasn't a huge disappointment like Ire Works, this wasn't nearly as impressive as their first 3 releases

Short answer: A combination of time and place as well as just generally solid songs.

detailed answer: in 1999 nothing like Calculating Infinity existed, the closest thing was probably American Nervoso or Petitioning the Empty Sky and even those aren't much like it, when you combine the fact that the band was so insane on a technical level and yet the songs had great structure and didn't ever devolve into wankfests was in itself an incredible achievment. On top of that the songs were just generally good and whilst their wasn't as much variation sound-wise as there would be on later works, there also weren't any slip ups.

Basically the album did things no one had done before and it did them well. so it's awesome.

Calculating Infinity is awesome because its aggressive in a way other bands really never do manage to replicate. CI rules because
its rhythmically amazing and unrelentingly dissonant. Basically it just kicks the shit out of you for 37 minutes. And unlike all their
other releases, the onslaught is almost never interrupted by less heavy parts, and when it is, its only for long enough to take a
breath before resuming the aural ass-kicking.

That said, I like their more experimental releases better. But when I'm in the mood for something angry, not even Jane Doe can
compare honestly.

^Agreeing with Irony and Shane. CI is one of them most intense albums I've ever listened to and there isn't really anything that compares.

In other news, this album is crazy good. I love the range of vocals throughout the album. Puciato's cleans are improved a bunch, the screaming is intense, and sometimes his higher screams even sound a bit like The Number Twelve.

Chinese Whispers is probably the catchiest song I've ever heard.
