I'm just here to add in that Robert Christgau is the worst mainstream music critic of the entire 20th century. He is the worst. The amount of incredible, genre-defining, utterly classic albums that man has completely lambasted because he only listens to maybe 4 basic bitch genres is astounding. Dude should have been employed by Rolling Stone for how many times he consistently over and over again totally shit on some of the greatest records ever. But atleast Stone owns up to their shittiness and re-rates Zeppelin and Sabbath albums 20 years later instead of Christgau who's still banging on a chess table in Central Park somewhere screaming about how OK Computer is a pile of shit still and Miles Davis is a hack.

I'm almost sure that Christgau is the worst music critic ever, mainstream or not, 20th century, later or before.

Yet still, he might be the only music critic that people know

Fucking Fantano is better than that man.

The problem with music critics of the 70s is that they're all fucking literature students. Christgau, Marsh, the whole lot of them, and that's what makes their takes so vapid and pretentious. I think Christgau is a phenomenally clever writer and that's why I enjoy reading his reviews, but his musical insight is non-existent because he knows nothing about it. That's what I hope the current generation of music critics is able to change. Having substantial connection with the art you're reviewing is crucial IMO

Fantano is actually good tbh. My kid cudi listening cousin now likes Daughters thanks to him. His influence is a positive thing.

Yeah thats why you follow part time social critic software devs like Scaruffi instead

"My kid cudi listening cousin now likes Daughters"
... Well, I guess that's an improvement. I hope it is.

Scaruffi is better than Fantano and Christgau, at least he knows more about the history of music than those two.

Also for a lit student Cristgaus reviews are... brief

Ersatz shit

The only time I've found a Christgau's review entertaining was when he kind of implied the the best thing Ian Curtis ever did was committing suicide. I don't agree, but I laughed.

Scaruffi also has prejudices and is a remarkably behind-the-times critic generally speaking. At least Christgau was instrumental in helping hip hop gain critical respect as a genre during the early-mid 80s

"Remarkably behind-the-times"?

Scaruffi hating the Beatles is about all you need to disregard his opinion tbh
Also fuck the Fantano hate, his influence has helped multiple bands/artists gain popularity and he’s not an asshole in his reviews

"Scaruffi hating the Beatles" not true btw

What I mean by “behind the times” is that Scaruffi has a particular era of music that he uses as a measuring stick for all music to come afterwards, which is an absurdly regressive way to analyze/critique music. Fantano takes the opposite approach and that’s why I think his reviews are so strong and hold up much better than Scaruffi or Christgau

Lol, which one? Early 1800s?
I think all three of them suck anyway, but Scaruffi is better than the other two. Christgau is a living joke and Fantano knows nothing about jazz and classical.
