First couple tracks on this kinda suck tbh.
Album is much better taking off Shadow in Our Blood/Dream Oblivion/The Fatalist, and putting the whole Zero Distance EP in place of them.

All I remember from this is Iridium and Arkhangelsk. Maybe I should revisit it.

I think this isn't any worse than the recent albums, time has vindicated this release definitely
ppl probably rated it too low because it was a noticeable step down from fiction, but it has a lot of moments all the same

many bangers and banger moments on here. it's def worth revisiting in light of their more recent albums. I find this much more memorable than their most recent one.

"ppl probably rated it too low because it was a noticeable step down from fiction"
honestly i think people were just on crack
i remember at the time trve meltalhvds thought they went too "gay" with the keybords and slower paced songs or something
but if anything this feels more like a sibling record to fiction

I don't think keyboards were ever the issue, at least not by themselves. I mean, they've been using them since Haven, and DD/Character/Fiction are all held in high regard. So is Haven, usually, just not as much as those three.
But those albums were still guitar driven, and had that riff-centric approach DT was known for. This album turned up the keys while also toning down the guitar, like a lot of songs just don't have the awesome riffs and leads you'd expect to hear on a DT album. Some songs do, like the bonus "To Where Fires Cannot Feed, but certainly not something like Dream Oblivion.
Edit: The review says it better than I can.
"cranking up the keys of Martin Brandstrom and turning the atmosphere of the album in a darker direction while pushing aside the memorable guitar leads and harmonies in favor of a strong chord presence to keep rhythm"
"If you take Fiction, cut out the awesome guitar riffs, increase the keyboard presence tenfold, and then make it more depressed-sounding, you will have exactly what We Are The Void delivers"
"Before long, you’ll wonder exactly why two guitars were needed on the album, since much of the time both are taking on the role of rhythm while the lead is eerily absent. Thankfully enough, however, the closing half of the album brings a small flicker of hope as songs like “I Am The Void”, “Iridium”, “The Grandest Accusation”, and “Surface The Infinite” bring life back into the album, saving it from the wallows of “Shadow In Our Blood”, “The Fatalist” and “Dream Oblivion”. "
Pretty much how I feel about this 100%
