The only two albums I didn't ever plan on getting are Orchid and Morningrise, since the heresay is the production is poopy and Orchid is meh.

Morningrise is my third favourite after MAYH and SL. Orchid is like a lesser Morningrise. The production is a little bad, but that doesn't stop them both from being awesome. I'd say give it a listen before buying it, but they aren't bad at all.

I love morningrise, but its probably the ony I listen to least because a lot of the songs seem to drag on for unnecessary length. I absolutely LOVE longer opeth songs, but only if there is a point to their length. I feel like morningrise would be better if the songs were more concise and to the point.

Orchid meh? Not at all

Believe me, I was like you in terms of the production on the two albums until I heard the songwriting on them. Dreamy moods you would never hear on the following releases and the riffs... aaaaah the riffs, sooo good.

yeah, they're both really good albums, but I admit not everyone will like them.

The bass pretty much owns on morningrise. It's very umm...watery sounding if that makes sense. Very organic, and you can here it pretty much all the time. There' some awesome slap bassing as well, like at the end of Nectar...PURE SEX!!!

I would say their older albums win atmosphere-wise, but then again it's a matter of taste, as all their albums have a unique atmosphere.

After hating on Morningrise (not that i could ever really hate anything opeth released),

I'd like to add that To Bid You Farewell is one of the best Opeth tracks ever! This Message Edited On 02.24.08

Anyone who thinks the production on Morningrise or Orchid is bad is being extremely nitpicky. Some people may like music that isn't as processed as a Fall Out Boy album.

This album really has grown on me. when I first listened to it I really didnt pay much attention to it and it kind of annoyed me, but for some reason I really wanted to keep listening to it again and again. Well, now I know why > because it is so damn amazing that my brain couldnt understand it at first. Now that my brain has gotten used to it, I can gladly say this is one of my favorite albums of all time. I dont understand why people dont like Dirge For November; it might be my favorite track off the album. The title track is also amazing. anyways, great review of a classic album.

Dirge for November is awesome, but the other tracks are just better. The title track is my favorite Opeth song ever.

I think Opeth might be an enjoyable band if the vocalist didn't scream like Satan. Actually the vocalist sounds like that cave thing in the Aladdin movie. When he actually sings the band sounds pretty good imo.

First I have to get this out: LOLOLOLOLOLOL
Ok. I take it you don't listen to much music with harsh vocals. If you don't like Opeth's death vocals you probably won't like anything in the genre seeing as Mikel Akerfeldt (their harsh and clean vocalist) is one of the best in metal, the best IMO from what I've heard, but I haven't heard much metal.
Listen to bands with inferior harsh vox like Between the Buried and Me, The Devil Wears Prada, etc and come back to this and see if he still sounds like that cave thing from Aladdin.

Your probably right. I mean I'm sure he's good at his given style but I can't stand it. It's just surprising at how many people on this site can tolerate those kind of vocals. I mean I've tried to get into the band but their singer gives me nightmares. They should make some Opeth instrumental albums and I would check it out.
