I would probably like this more if it hadn't been so hyped, but I'm still giving it the benefit of the doubt by giving it a 4 for now.

If just recently gotten into Sufjan about a month or two ago, starting with this album. I guess I have to give it that; it introduced me to Stevens wonderful work

Maybe a couple more listens couldn't hurt. There is a lot of material to digest

I'm probably 10 listens in now and still hoping it'll grow. Tbh I haven't really dug into the lyrics yet, maybe that'll help.

"His standard folk tracks just feel horribly lacking in variety"

they might not be the most diverse but those are the songs where sufjan's talent as a songwriter is most clearly shown. i love how he can so masterfully create the atmosphere and capture the emotions without having to musically over-do anything. that's why i think seven swans and carrie & lowell are his best efforts

Also some of the tracks here sound like Neutral Milk Hotel wannabes, particularly the interludes

I don't want to sound like it don't like this though. I'm just having a hard time comprehending the hype.

No I'm talking about In the Aeroplane

But Black Hawk War, and To the Workers...kind of sound like Fool and Penny Arcade from Aeroplane. Maybe I'm crazy. Perhaps "wannabes" is too strong a word, "reminiscent" is better.

Maybe it's just the horns idk

i guess those horns may have a sprinkle of ITAOTS in them, but not really enough to call it reminiscent.

Yeah the more I think about it the less sense the comparison makes

Despite my not being totally blown away by this album (I am sort of stuck between the 3.5 and a 4), "Come On Feel the Illinoise" is a definite 5/5 track.
