Defeat is definitely not what I want from them sonically. The closer is up there with any of their best songs though.

yeah I wouldn’t go that far. I still like it but Long Defeat is easily their weakest record aside from the first two but we don’t really even count those right? They were basically a different band at that point if I’m not mistaken.

I agree that its their "weakest" since the first 2 but it still rips hard. I will stand alone at the top of that hill lol.

Furnaces is my favorite, but otherwise I agree with the Fas/Paracletus supremacy

You could call literally any of their records (and some of their EPs) between Si and Furnaces their best and I wouldn’t argue

I stand by Our Life is Your Death being a classic track. Just kept growing on me over the years.

I somehow knew you would share my admiration for this train guy.

I feel like a whiny tool fan every time I think this, but Deathspell really ruined most other tech/prog types of extreme metal for me. Gorguts is really the only other one that doesn’t come across as vapid.

They are on a completely different level yeah... I still can enjoy some other avant-garde/tech stuff. Gorguts is the closest thing when it comes to compositional skills indeed.
The next band I would mention would be Thantifaxath, which are genius aswell.
DsO, Gorguts, Thantifaxath... something about the french language/idiosyncrasy that keeps producing these awesome artists in every discipline and form...
PS: Then there is Kayo Dot, but they are so different to the type of extreme metal we are refering to that I won't mention them, altogh they play on a league of their own aswell.

Ad Nauseam feels like they belong in the convo, and Vertebra Atlantis was close with their debut.

yeah, I'm going with Ad Naus, Pyrrhon and Imp Trump after the obvious guts/DSO combo
I do like me some Suffering Hour but will give them a *pending* for now

Imp Trump def belongs to this convo for me aswell. Ad Naus sound too derivative for me still (wild take it seems), althogh I won't deny they have the potential to release something truly outstanding. Pyrrhon's last one was immense but they have to prove themseleves again.

Pyrrhon have proven themselves no less than three times by now.

greatest band of all time

oh hell yeah Imperial Triumphant rules, Thantifaxath is sick too.
Literally caught the tour with Imperial Triumphant and Pyrrhon. The Pyrrhon dudes were so funny. There was like maybe 30 people in the crowd and they were just stoked to be playing on a tall stage lol

I’ll have to check out Ad Nauseam. I feel like I saw them getting a lot of praise here last year(?) but I just never got around to it.

Doug Moore is the preeminent death metal vox GOAT, all other dm pales before him and his versatility
