i get what youre saying but i sort of disagree and am struggling to conceptualise why.
i think what im trying to think is that even though i agree that there is no fine line where someone becomes familiar enough to adequately pass judgement on a genre's ethos (whatever all that even means, i know we can discuss 'adequately', 'pass judgement', and 'genre's ethos' forever) i still think someone requires a certain amount of familiarity or shall we say 'grounding' or 'bearings' to really 'get' most things.
in a similar vein, i believe people gain a sort of practical wisdom throughout life as they age, although its impossible to pinpoint and define adequately

Having more familiarity should be encouraged sure. I even defend gatekeeping to some extent. I think the existence of a fine line is so that people do not immediately dismiss entire styles, not individual artists.
