honestly if you're listening to prog and metal and shit for lyrics then you're pretty stupid, but I guess that doesn't mean they shouldn't make them THAT bad

I love this so much. as an album, my favourite pt release. the concept is so true and amazing, when they played the whole thing through live it was incred and that had a lot to do with the video backdrop they had, which made everything to do with the album a lot more prominent. sensational.

I feel like the biggest downfall of this album is the execution of its concept. I understand that the album is supposed to be told through the eyes a modern youth who suffers through a lot of what the youth is plagued with today: isolation, depression, unhealthy amount of time playing video games etc. This is an interesting concept but the problem is that the album never rises above it to provide any insight or commentary. Lines like "And I don't like the questions 'How do you feel?', "How's it goin in school?', "Do you want to talk about it?' feel lazy and uninspired. They sit on the surface of the intriguing concept and make the record feel juvenile and undercooked. But wait, isn't the record supposed to be told through the eyes of a young kid who would probably be thinking those exact words? Yes. But filling an album with lines like that makes it feel just as juvenile as the character and takes away from any message that the band may have.
That being said, I do enjoy a number of the melodies and riffs on this album and there are a few poignant lyrics. "My Ashes" is the perfect example of the potential that the album's concept has. The music and the lyrics together are able to conjure up images and emotions that the character must be feeling and give the listener a sense of understanding and compassion. The majority of the album though doesn't have this coexistence between the music and the lyrics and the result is that the album feels like a product of a disturbed youth rather than a profound examination. Usually I would be able to separate the lyrics from the music a bit more easily but the concept of the album is such a big part of what it is supposed to be that it's just something that can't really be ignored.

Anesthetize is one of the best really long songs I've heard in quite some time. Gavin Harrison is my favorite drummer and for damn good reason.
