"When it came out, it was my favourite Deftones album. Since then I've become more partial to Diamond Eyes but both are incredible."

exact opposite for me. Diamond Eyes will always be my second favorite since its the record that got me into the band, but Koi is just such an amazing expansion on that same sound that I cant help but like it more.

Alex, I’m not a djent guy at all but to me his rhythmic choices and guitar tones changed with DE and this album compared to the previous more nu metal inspired stuff. I know Stephen listens to all the new stuff that comes out and to me temporally the influence is pretty evident, though minor

Eh I can see your point in his guitar tones, not so much on the rhythmic choices. They play with the 7/8 time signature quite a bit on this, DE, and even SNW but not really in a djent-y way imo.

Even the parts of the albums that most closely resemble djent (like the Diamond Eyes outro, or the Rosemary breakdown) more closely resemble something Wes Boreland or Head would write as opposed to say, Misha Mansoor. The only thing they've done that sounds particularly djent influenced that I can think of is the long droney outro of the Gore t/t.

This not to say Steph is holding the band back or anything, his style is one of the things that keeps the band so fresh tbh. Nobody is really playing in that style anymore, and that coupled with the shoegazy stuff Chino contributes creates a rather unique sound.

I disagree completely that the rhythms still have that archetypal nu metal feel. I actually jammed parts of Adrenaline before this and DE today and the difference in feel couldn’t be more stark. I’m not saying the influence is huge, just noticeable, same as the grunge influences I referenced above, which I think are more important to this album’s feel

That's cause Steph's playing on that album really isn't all that nu-metal ironically, at least imo. Way more classic metal/hardcore inspired as nu metal wasn't really a thing when it came out. He plays the whole album on a standard tuned six string in fact. Chino and Abe contribute far more to the “nu metal” tag, at least on that particular album.

His playing on Around the Fur on the other hand, is definitely similar to what he does on these newer albums imo. Riffs on Headup and My Own Summer aren't all that different from Poltergeist or Goon Squad, they've just been even further de-tuned and the rest of the band has added so much more elements around it.

You’re really gonna listen to stuff like Engine no 9 and tell me that’s not typical nu metal rhythmically? Yeah it was one of the trendsetting albums, doesn’t mean it didn’t feature most of the typical elements. ATF also feels nothing like DE or KNY to me rhythmically. I guess this is the subjective aspect of listening, clearly we hear these albums very differently. I grew up with nu metal and then the core craze and used to hang out with Misha and Alec Kahney when the former was still posting POD demos on the sneap forum and the latter was busy trying to dial in triple rec tones in the mid 00s, and to me when DE dropped it felt like a clear shift in feel and tonal influences from Stephen.

Before any of the djent albums came out (and personally I hate the scene), some of the personalities had already popularized the shift in guitar tones and rhythms through all of their viral online activity and in production/gear circles, and I know for a fact a lot of the artists that were bigger at the time (like Stephen, or Matt Heafy, or Bjorn Strid, or Chris and Willien Adler, etc) and producers like Sneap and Bogren and others took note of the trend as it was developing. I guess you could argue that it’s more that they had popularized their own influences at the time (eg Loomis or Thorendal or Sikth) but to me that’s just a semantic distinction in what I’m talking about.

thinking about 5ing this. For me, this is their most coherent album and I would love if they would return to these types of transitions. Also Gauze and Rosemary are maybe the best performances by Frank Delgado, who really shines on this gem

Frank’s best performance will always be Digital Bath and Change imo, just too iconic.

And gotta disagree with you pika, I can’t think of a band that releases music that’s this fucking quality 20 years into their career. Koi and Diamond Eyes are probably my favorite albums they’ve made.

I disagree.

SNW is a great record, but Mein is weak and Pink Cellphone is probably the worst song the band has ever written. Koi and Diamond Eyes are far more consistent.

Gore is about on the same level as this imo

This was probably the most overrated album of 2012 when it came out

Average started at like 4.6

agreed. Mein rules and latter tones have these overdramatic moments that turn me off the songs a bit
