Yeah I'd take any of my early comments with a large pinch of salt, initially Boxer underwhelmed apart from a couple of tracks, now I love it about as much as Alligator. This has even fewer obvious stand-out moments on first impression but it might be a slower burner (like their previous albums were).
It'll be interesting to see how this pans out.

Given you only gave this a 4 there’s a chance you could enjoy Sad Songs more, but the debut is pretty much objectively their worst.

Their debut sucks pretty hard.

The debut is ok and has some good songs, it's just very inferior to everything they did afterwards.

Well this is embarrassing...
If only the whole album was anywhere near as good as Runaway & Vanderlyle.

This started out as my favorite, but recently I've come to enjoy Alligator more. Boxer is kinda overrated imo. Might be my fifth favorite National.

I just went & listened to a few tracks from Boxer again & much prefer the way it sounds, don’t think it’s simply a song-writing thing. Vox almost sound neutered on this, not as deep & reverberating.

In layman’s terms - Alligator dropped and no one, including myself, were sure The National were a real deal big band worth getting a sweat over
Boxer dropped - National were a big band, no one was left in any doubt
