I listened to this and Watershed consecutively, still enjoyed Watershed more (which isn’t even close to the hardest ‘test’ I could give BWP). If this is ever going to reveal itself as one of Opeth’s greatest achievements, then it’ll be the slowest burner in the history of slow burners.
Maintaining the status quo of being 8th in the Opeth hierarchy.

Other way around for me. Loved it immediately, was my fave for a few years, then dropped slightly and has been in their middle ranks for a while now.

I think this has the most striking moments on it.
The end of Leper Infinity
That guitar bit in Bleak which is absolutely classic!!
The melody of Harvest
The eeriness of Drapery Falls
The oomph of Funeral Portrait
The concluding bit of the t/t.
Overall it’s their most accomplished album, sits firmly in 3rd place and is definitely my most listened to record of the past 12mnths but I’d still take Heritage and Orchid over it.

For sure, t/t here could even be their best track overall. So perfect.
Love their more mysterious sound (Orchid, Morningrise, MAYH, Heritage) too much though. Or their groovy proggy side (GR). BWP can become a little too polished sometimes for my tastes. Don't even know if 'polished' is the right term, but I hope it gets the point across.
Also: this is still a very comfortable 4.5. Puts things in perspective: they rule so incredibly hard.

Yeah this is polished, perfected, knowing it’s limits and staying within those boundaries to produce an album almost without blemish. Impressive, yet it doesn’t doesn’t quite speak to me in the same way. The Leper Affinity is one of their best tracks though and I do very much enjoy Bleak/the t/t in particular.
Still Life takes a lot of the same formula and does it better.

There’s certainly some polish on them wilson vox when he crops up on Bleak like a fart in a lift. Absolutely amazing song though so it’s forgiven.

Still Life has less interesting and/or beautiful tracks and is therefore automatically not better :[

Dirge For November outro + Harvest are prettier than anything on that album, get your ears unblocked from all that thrash
